Presidio Hill School offers students opportunities to develop personal learning styles through independent and collaborative work that is child-centered and project-based. Students are encouraged to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom setting. It is an honor to work at a school that truly lives out its mission.

I feel honored to be part of a community dedicated to instilling a passion for not only learning, but global stewardship as well. PHS strives to recognize and celebrate the many facets that our students bring to the table and it is refreshing to be surrounded by faculty and staff that truly work as a team to address the needs of those they serve. I am thrilled to be able to work with PHS students on self-advocacy and resiliency - two skills that are critical for the future.

I want my students to love thinking, to enjoy toggling with ideas, and to be open to changing their minds. Learning is a messy process and, seemingly, has no end. Presidio Hill values students' abilities as original thinkers and encourages them to take an active role in their community. I appreciate that the school culture encourages engagement with topics pertinent to our students' lives, building curriculum around what interests, inspires and motivates, rather than simply preparing them for their next academic steps.

I feel so fortunate to work with and learn from the dedicated teachers at PHS by being a part of the first group of student-teachers in the USF/PHS Teacher Apprenticeship Program. Being a part of the community at PHS has been such an inspiration as to what 'whole student' teaching is and can be. The lessons taught at PHS not only focus on academics but social emotional learning as well which equips students to grow both as scholars and as members of an engaged society as well.

Having a background in outdoor education, I was immediately drawn to Presidio Hill School's  commitment to hands-on experiential learning and environmental stewardship. Having direct access to the Presidio allows teachers to bring the outside world into the classroom and bring the classroom into the world. I'm so excited to be learning from and working with Tira and all of our fourth graders!

I value teaching at Presidio Hill because I am able to tailor my curriculum to fit the needs and interests of my students. When my students’ stories and backgrounds are integrated into the classroom, the curriculum can act as both windows and mirrors for each of my students. This allows students to see themselves and understand their own identity as well as learn about cultures, perspectives, and ideas that are new and often different from their own. .

What brings me to PHS is its commitment to respecting developmental needs, providing a safe environment to celebrate diversity and creativity, and promoting freedom and responsibility for all students and faculty. I embrace teaching as an opportunity to inspire and empower my community by enhancing student learning as a transformative experience by having my students feel personally responsible for their scholastic experience in my classroom. In my view, teaching is not about instructing or imparting information to students as if their minds were waiting to be filled with my knowledge. Rather, it is about empowering responsibility in learning, inspiring courage to grow intellectually, cultivating curiosity, and providing opportunities for developing relationships, clarifying values, uplifting potential and igniting action.

At PHS we foster a love of artistic expression in our students. We encourage them to explore, invent, take risks, and share who they are. In Music, the students will have total, active involvement in music making, releasing creativity that extends far beyond the music classroom. At PHS the community celebrates diversity and values and cultivates in its students compassion, empathy and respect. This creates a non-competative, fun, fertile environment for learning and making good music together.

Presidio Hill intentionally celebrates individual learning styles and unique viewpoints. This engenders an inclusive and caring community for all. I enjoy that students are provided the opportunity to reflect on their own learning and encouraged to become a part of the learning process. As a science teacher, the curriculum allows me to teach to my passions, this flexibility creates a program where I can respond to the needs and curiosities of the students. This approach allows students to build personal connections with the natural world, thus providing students with inspiration, skills and desire to become global of the world around them.

John Dewey famously asserted that "education is not preparation for life, education is life itself" and the spirit of that maxim is alive and well here at Presidio Hill School, where children and adults embrace and learn from one another as symbiotic members of a distinct community of individuals. As I see it, the humanities classroom should be a place for students to actively explore, investigate, collaborate, and inquire about themselves and the world around them, past and present. I feel grateful to be part of the PHS community, where such exploration extends far beyond my classroom and in fact, is ingrained so deeply in the mission and overall ethos of our school.

Teaching at a progressive school like PHS means more than just developing a progressive curriculum: it means working with students who are empowered, independent, and inventive. In the PHS art room I help curious hands explore new materials, young artists experiment with self-expression, and open-minded students see the world through fresh eyes. Creativity, flexibility, and imagination are encouraged by both teachers and students at Presidio Hill—values that not only form the basis of a healthy progressive education, but are the underpinnings of art itself.

As a teacher my role is to guide students to create meaning and develop questions about the world around them. I believe that deep learning happens when students are given the opportunity to explore, create, play, experiment, and make mistakes. In my classroom there is equal emphasis on rigorous, engaging academic content and robust social emotional skill development. I prioritize creating a strong, caring community among students and facilitating the development of empathic, self-confident children. With the right balance of joy and perseverance, all students will reach their goals. I look forward to joining them on this journey.

When my son was one year old, I came to work at Presidio Hill School, having been urged to apply by friends who knew my work with children. They told me how happy their kids were at the school, how wonderful the teachers, how exciting the lessons. My son is now 18, a graduate of PHS, and I still feel the excitement and pride in being part of the progressive education provided at this school. It is a joy to communicate my love of music to children and families, and to grow as a musician and a teacher by living with the deep emotions of children singing.

I came to PHS because teachers are encouraged to teach in the way that is best for children. Students have choices in what they read, write and study. We are given time to "go deep", ask questions, make mistakes and be reflective at the end of a unit of study.  At PHS, social/emotional learning is valued because when kids feel good about themselves, the possibilities are endless in the classroom.

Everyday in the classroom I strive to model the boundless enthusiasm I feel for learning and I find ways to show this excitement in order to instill the belief that life is more meaningful when we continue to ask questions. I know that my influences and experiences to date have shaped my mindset on learning, and I seek to impart this by being an example and prototype for my students by asking questions, giving feedback not just praise, as well as teaching to their interests. I look forward to continuing to inspire a creative, respectful and diverse learning environment; an environment where every child feels as though they have an important voice and are able to share this beyond the timeline and boundaries of the classroom walls.
